TWENTY-FOUR

Robert got to his feet and tried to brush himself off but the uncomfortable pressure and restriction of the portal made it difficult. Robert decided it would be simpler to brush himself off when he was out of the portal. He stepped to his left and looked out to see what awaited him like his father always did. His eyes fell upon a barren plain without a dwelling in sight, nowhere could he see people on foot or on horseback. There didn’t seem to be any danger so he stepped out and brushed himself off. He looked around but there was nothing to see other than mountains in the distance and a desolate desert landscape with cacti and the occasional juniper tree. He was alone and frightened and he didn’t know what to do. This was what his father had warned him about: traveling through a portal and getting out and then not being able to find his way back. But what could he do? If he went back through the portal, the soldier would still be waiting for him and if he reappeared, the soldier would most likely kill him. In Robert’s young mind, he tried to think what his father would do. He’d look for another portal and try to find his way back home. But Robert didn’t know how to do that. He was a little boy who was lost. He sat down on a large flat rock. He was confused and very scared and he started to cry. My father warned me never enter a portal without him because he was afraid I would get lost and I wouldn’t be able to find my way home. Still sobbing, Robert stood and took another long look at his surroundings. He thought he saw smoke coming from behind some hills in the distance. He stared in that direction to see if he was right, but clouds obstructed his view. He started to walk toward the area where he thought he saw the smoke coming from. Maybe there was someone or a family camping out for the night. He was hungry and the hunger drove him to walk in that direction. If there were people there, they wouldn’t harm a little boy, he thought trying to convince himself… and if I ask them, maybe they’ll let me eat with them. Robert had never been so frightened or lonely in his young life. He realized now that he had always taken the love and care his mother showered on him for granted, and even his father who tried to teach him right from wrong and was preparing him to be a man. Well, if he ever got out of this predicament, he’d certainly let his mother and father know how much he loved them.

It was getting colder and Robert only had a light jacket on, which he pulled tighter around him. He pulled the hood over his head and pulled the loops tighter.

Robert was getting tired. He had walked a long, long way.
